During the tea, we will be entertained by a local actress portraying Rosie the Riveter. Did you know that “Rosie the Riveter” got her start in Pittsburgh, Pa, on a poster designed for the Westinghouse Electric Company, along with the slogan “We Can Do It!” Rosie is a cultural icon who represented women who worked in traditional male jobs during World War II and became widely known as symbols of women’s empowerment.

This act was aimed at improving the living conditions of people suffering during the Great Depression. Mrs. Roosevelt visited impoverished coal camps just outside of Morgantown, WV, and was deeply moved by their hardship. She purchased farmland and began creating the first experimental community. Between 1933 and 1937, 165 houses were erected on 1,200 acres. A community was born. Guests will be greeted by the Arthurdale Director of Education and enjoy a docent-led tour of this unique historic site to learn more.
